Five people have been taken to hospitals — one in critical condition — after an explosion occurred this morning on Bayonne’s former Military Ocean Terminal, police confirmed. NJ.com reports.

At 9:01 a.m., workers were conducting a “pressure test of a gas line” on Chosin Few Way when a “small explosion” happened, Bayonne police Lt. Robert Wizbicki said.

PSE&G officials said a contractor working for PSE&G was installing a new gas main and testing the main with air when the incident occurred. There was no natural gas flowing through the main at the time of the incident, the officials said.

Bayonne police corroborated that account, adding that the gas line “failed” while it was being tested with pressurized air. Police said there is “no danger of any gas leak or additional risk.”

Wizbicki said two police officers were also at the scene at the time of the explosion.

Two workers were taken to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health, while one worker and two officers were taken to Bayonne Medical Center, according to police.

One worker is in critical condition, one in serious condition and the third is being treated for minor injuries, according to police, Bayonne Medical Center and Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health.

Meanwhile, the two police officers are in stable condition, Bayonne Medical Center spokesman Jarrod Bernstein said.

PSE&G officials said the cause of the incident is being further investigated.

The Occupation Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor has been notified, and will also be looking into the incident, police said.

PSE&G, Bayonne police and Bayonne fire responded to the incident.
