A construction worker is lucky to be alive after falling three stories from a ladder in Downtown Jersey City yesterday, the Jersey Journal reports.
The 33-year-old man was climbing a ladder and fell from 30 feet off the ground when he stepped on a piece of plywood that gave way, according to a police report.
Police responded to 155 Marin Boulevard at around 12:30 p.m. and found the victim being treated by EMTs and members of the Jersey City Fire
Department. The man was conscious and alert, but complained of back pain, the report states.
The site foreman told police that he was climbing a ladder between the second and third floors of the building and fell after stepping on the plywood, the report says.
The man was taken to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health, where a doctor made an initial diagnosis of a possible mid-back fracture, the report indicates. However, the victim was treated and released, hospital spokesman Mark Rabson confirmed.
Police notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Parsippanny office and provided an official there with the pertinent information on the incident. Police were not given a timetable for a followup investigation from the federal agency, the report states.
Yesterday’s incident is at least the second industrial accident in Downtown Jersey City in the last week. On Wednesday, a piece of concrete fell from the 31st floor of the new Trump tower at Greene and Morgan Streets and hit a police officer in the torso. The officer was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was later released, a spokeswoman for the city said.
OSHA confirmed it is investigating last week’s incident.
