Distracted Driving

The term“Distracted Driving” is an umbrella under which many activities fall–driving while texting, eating, grooming or performing other activities and talking on a cell phone, for example. According to NHTSA “Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed”.

You are not necessarily safer just because your eyes are on the road and your hands on the wheel if your brain is not geared on driving.  It is not possible to drive safe unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

Statistical findings from the U.S. Department of Transportation reveals that “2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. During daylight hours, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving. That creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. Teens were the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes”.

During April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, NHTSA leads the fight nationally against distracted driving by educating Americans about its dangers and partnering with the States and local police to enforce laws against distracted driving that help keep us safe. So be aware of this scourge which is even more dangerous than driving while intoxicated, make a positive lifesaving change that will make you safer year-round. Before you start the car, shut down your phone. Put it out of reach so you won’t be tempted by it. Recommit yourself to safe driving by not giving in to distraction and by focusing solely on the road. You’ll save yourself the cost of a ticket and maybe even save a life.
