A 19-year-old Jersey City city man who is in the Hudson County jail awaiting trial on murder charges has been charged with raping a 15-year-old girl based on a DNA match made while he has been behind bars.

Jim Hendrix of the 100 block of Duncan Avenue is charged with aggravated sexual assault for allegedly dragging the girl “off the sidewalk into a secluded area between two houses” and raping her on Sept. 11, 2014, the criminal complaint says.

He is also charged with kidnapping the girl, who is now 16 years old, endangering her welfare and child abuse, the court document states.

Probable cause for the charges is the recorded statement of the girl, her positive identification of Hendrix as the person who sexually assaulted her and “DNA belonging to the defendant obtained from the victim’s clothing,” according to the complaint.

On Oct. 18, Hendrix turned himself in to Jersey City police after being charged with fatally shooting Dyrell Taylor, 21, during a robbery on Union Street near Bergen Avenue on Oct. 14 at about 6:30 p.m. Taylor died 18 hours later at Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health, officials said at the time.

Hendrix was processed on the murder charge by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office and remanded to the Hudson County jail in Kearny where he was held in lieu of a $500,000 cash only bail.
Hendrix’s bail on the new charges has been set at $250,000 cash or bond by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Martha Royster.
