A 20-year-old Flemington man faces multiple charges after he told police he was going at least twice the speed limit when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree, injuring him and his two passengers, NJ.com is reporting.
The driver, Daniel K. Oberst, suffered injuries to his knee, lower leg and foot in the 5:19 p.m. crash, police said. His front-seat passenger, Nelson C. Ortiz, 21, of Clinton, remained hospitalized Tuesday in critical condition with head injuries, officials said.
A 17-year-old from Lebanon who was riding in the back seat also remained hospitalized with injuries to his abdomen and pelvis. Police declined to identify the teen because he is a juvenile and his condition was not immediately available.
“By his own admission, he was going at least 70 miles an hour,” police Lt. Kevin Donovan said of Oberst. The speed limit on Featherbed Lane in Raritan where Oberst lost control of his 2008 Subaru Impreza is 35 mph.
Oberst was driving north when his car swerved off the road, hit a culvert and came back across the road where he struck a tree, Donovan said. The accident occurred on a curve in the road, south of the intersection with Oak Grove Road.
Both passengers were airlifted to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.
Oberst, who was treated and released from Hunterdon Medical Center, faces charges of reckless driving, careless driving, speeding, and failure to maintain control.
“Everything’s still under investigation,” Donovan said, adding that more charges could follow.
