Alexis Ramos, 37, of Elizabeth, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident in which an 18-year-old Linden man was killed. (Linden Police Department)

An Elizabeth man is being held on $75,000 bail, charged with striking and killing a man while riding his motorcycle on Routes 1 & 9, and then fleeing from the scene. The Jersey Journal reports.

Alexis Ramos, 37, was charged with a second-degree crime of knowingly leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a death, for the Sept. 12 collision when Rajon Lasane, 18, of Linden, was struck and killed, police said.

Authorities said Lasane left his job at the ShopRite at about 12 a.m. on Sept. 12, and was walking on Routes 1 & 9 near the entrance to Route 287 when he was struck by a 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa.

The motorcyclist left the scene, and Lasane’s body remained on the road and was struck by another vehicle before emergency response personnel arrived, police said.

Police traffic investigators Peter Hammer and Mark Kahana located several vehicle parts at the crime scene, leading them to determine that Lasane was struck by a 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa, authorities said. They said Hammer also retrieved several surveillance videos from area.

Subsequently, police officer Michael Richmond found a 2002 Hayabusa on Grier Avenue where the motorcycle was parked on a city street, but concealed under a  vehicle cover, police said.

The motorcycle was towed from the scene, and Hammer obtained a search warrant for the motorcycle, authorities said. They said a Union County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit processed the vehicle, and retrieved evidence leading investigators to Ramos.

Ramos later agreed to come to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office in Elizabeth to speak with Hammer and Detective Rudy Correia of the prosecutor’s office. During the interview Ramos allegedly confessed to striking Lasane, police said.

In addition to the charge for leaving the scene of the accident, Ramos was also arrested for several outstanding warrants.

A second-degree charge carries a maximum penalty upon conviction of 10 years in prison.
