The family of an Ocean Gate police officer who was killed in a crash on Thanksgiving Day 2010 will receive $10.1 million, according to a NJ.com news report.

An Ocean County jury awarded the money on Friday, attorneys representing the estate of Officer Jason Marles told the Asbury Park Press. The money will go into a trust fund for Marles’ two children, who are ages 9 and 11.

According to the report, the jury’s verdict against Erick P. Uzcategui, 36, of Manchester, places blame of Marles’ death fully on him and clears Seaside Heights nightclub Bamboo Bar of any wrongdoing. The club also had been named in a civil suit.

Marles, who had been on the Ocean Gate force for nine years, was headed home after his shift shortly after 3 a.m. Nov. 25, 2010, when Uzcategui, driving a 2010 BMW X7, rear-ended Marles’ Jeep Cherokee on the Garden State Parkway northbound.

The collision, near milepost 83.3 in Toms River, caused Marles’ Jeep to spin out of control and strike a guardrail. The Jeep came to a rest on its roof and burst into flames.

Marles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Uzcategui had a blood alcohol level of 0.155 at the time of the crash. He was charged and later convicted of vehicular homicide on July 11, 2014.

Uzcategui is currently serving an eight-year state prison term, the report said.
