As you must know by now, the son of Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning, United States District Judge
David Bunning, yesterday held Rowan County (Kentucky) Clerk Kim Davis in contempt for disobeying his order to issue marriage licenses. Davis refused to do so, citing “God’s authority” and her objections to same-sex marriage.
Judge Bunning threw Davis in jail as he expressed doubts that a monetary sanction would be sufficient to secure compliance with his Order.
In my view, the most important part of what transpired in Judge Bunning’s courtroom did not involve Davis, who has become a martyr or a witch, depending on your point of view. Instead, after having Davis carted off to jail, Bunning made clear to her deputy clerks that they were required to abide by his order and they, too, faced possible contempt sanctions if they refused to issue marriage licenses.
It worked. This morning, in Rowan County, Kentucky, a gay couple was issued the marriage license to which hey are entitled. Meanwhile, Kim Davis remains in jail and her husband says she will stay there for “as long as it takes”. Just what “it” is, I have no idea at this point.
Have a great and safe Labor Day weekend. Enjoy!
