A Minnesota dentist payed a lot of money to fly to Zimbabwe and kill an iconic lion, Cecil.  Now, there are widespread calls for his prosecution.  None other than former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has called on the hunter – whom I will not dignify by naming here – to be sent to prison.  Good.

Meanwhile, the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is on-edge after sightings of a large “catlike animal.” While there has been much speculation about what the creature is and where it may have come from, it is still on the loose- with its own Twitter account, @Milwaukee_Lion, and a hashtag devoted to it, #MKELion.

The New York Times reports that the big cat could be someone’s pet as “Wisconsin state law is notably relaxed on the possession of exotic animals. Or it could be a cougar, an animal that has been spotted more frequently in populated areas of the Midwest in recent years.”  I imagine that if this turns out to be a cougar, there will be calls for more hunting to kill them off.  By the way, in what might be the understatement of the year so far, one expert has opined that the animal is probably a cougar but a pet and that “it should be taken seriously.”  How else should one “take” a lion or cougar roaming the streets?
