I’ve said before that I think the word  “hero” suffers from overuse in our country today but these guys really are heroes.  As you can see, these two members of San Mateo (California) Sheriff’s Office pull a reportedly intoxicated person from a car just seconds before it gets creamed by an oncoming train.  Great and brave work, Deputies Lance Whitted and Erik Rueppe.

 

 

Certainly, I’ve been critical of police abuses and we’ve seen plenty of those.  I think the inimitable John Stewart put it well, though:

“By the way, …. you can truly grieve for every officer who’s been lost in the line of duty in this country, and still be troubled by cases of police overreach.  Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive. You can have great regard for law enforcement and still want them to be held to high standards.”
