A Jersey City man with open warrants bolted from police yesterday afternoon, tried to hide inside a woman’s apartment, and then punched an officer pursuing him, The Jersey Journal reports.

The pursuit ended with police arresting Carlos J. Lopez, 37, of Central Avenue, and charging him with aggravated assault on a police officer, burglary, resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Shortly before noon, police were in the area in of Leonard Street and Central Avenue when they spotted two men — later identified as Lopez and Juan Jeminez, 38, of Central Avenue — exchange an object believed to be drugs for money, according to a police report.

Lopez then headed north on Paterson Plank Road, prompting officers in plain clothes to exit their vehicle with their badges exposed and stop Lopez at Fourth Street, the report indicates.

While conducting a warrant check, police learned he had two outstanding warrants out of Allentown, Pa. and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, but when Lopez heard the radio transmission notifying the officers, he took off running toward Central Avenue, the report states.

Lopez then turned north on Central Avenue before heading westbound on Leonard Street and running into the backyards of a Central Avenue building, police said.

While searching the area, police found Lopez inside a woman’s home in a nearby apartment building. Lopez resisted arrest and punched an officer in the body before he was restrained and placed into custody, the report states.

According to the report, Jeminez helped Lopez get into the woman’s apartment, although she told police she does not know Lopez and did not allow him into her unit.

Jeminez was later arrested at a nearby Central Avenue address and charged with hindering apprehension, police said.
