Jersey City man was charged with weapons offenses after police heard a shot fired in the area of Rutgers and Cator avenues early Sunday morning, The Jersey Journal reports.

Omar Richardson, 22, of Clinton Avenue, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and as a person not to have weapons, police said.

Richardson told police he found the gun hidden on a tire of a parked car — a common hiding place for a community gun — and was going to sell it, police said.

But the gun went off accidentally, Richardson told police, and he then hid it in a pipe in an alleyway on Rutgers Avenue, police said.  Police made a quick arrest of Richardson after a detective working in the Juvenile Bureau heard the gunshot and began investigating and called for backup, police said.
