A 24-year-old Jersey City man who was shot in his leg around midnight Friday in Jersey City drove himself to a Newark hospital and initially told police he was shot in Newark, according to a report in the Jersey Journal.

Jersey City police responded to Wegman Parkway and Bergen Avenue on reports of shots fired, but were unable to locate any victim, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

A short time later, Newark police notified Jersey City that a victim with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his leg had gone to University Hospital in Newark.

The victim initially told authorities he had been shot in Newark near Penn Station, but he later admitted that the incident happened at the corner of Audubon and Bergen avenues in Jersey City, and that he drove to Newark because he was concerned about violating his parole, Morrill said.
