Linden Police Capt. James Sarnicki said police were called to the scene of the shooting just after 7 p.m., and while en route a report came in that a Toyota Camry had struck a fence and utility pole at Bower and East Henry streets, just a few blocks away.

At the scene of the crash, police found the mother, 41, and her daughter, 15, suffering from gunshot wounds, Sarnicki said.

Sarnicki said that according to witnesses, the mother and daughter entered their car when they were approached by a black male wearing a blue or black bubble-type jacket with white lines or white lettering.

The man is described as heavy or husky-build, 6’0″, and is in his 30s, Sarnicki said. He also had a dark scarf wrapped around his head covering his face except for his eyes, he said.

Witnesses told police the man walked up to the passenger side of the car and exchanged words with the 15-year-old girl before she entered the car. He then drew a handgun and fired at the car striking both victims, Sarnicki said.

The shooter fled on foot possibly to a vehicle parked down the street, the captain said. He said the mother then crashed her car into the utility pole.

The mother was shot several times to the torso and pelvis and is in critical condition but stable condition at University Hospital in Newark, Sarnicki said. He said the girl was shot to the wrist and had a graze wound to her face, but has since been released from the hospital.

Sarnicki said investigators believe the mother and daughter were targeted and that there is no other danger to the community.

The Union County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit responded to the two locations to assist Linden officers and detectives processing the scene for evidence.
