Over the weekend, it was pointed out to me that it’s less than five months until Christmas.  And Christmas Day can only mean one  thing – movie openings!!

One film (that sounds better than “movie”) which will be released on Christmas is called “Concussion.”
It stars Will Smith and Alec Baldwin and looks at National Football League players who suffer head injuries and concussions and the life-long problems they have to deal with after their playing days. Smith plays Dr. Bennett Omalu who discovers [Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy] in the brains of two NFL players which later leads to their suicides.

It has been reported that NFL owners spent significant time at their May 2015 meeting discussing how top deal with and respond to the movie.  Recall that in April of this year a federal judge approved the settlement of a lawsuit brought by more than 5,000 former players who accused the N.F.L. of hiding from them the dangers of concussions, a major step toward ending one of the most contentious legal battles in league history.

That settlement provides payments of up to $5 million to players who have one of a handful of severe neurological disorders, medical monitoring for all players to determine if they qualify for a payment and $10 million for education about concussions. { }

Michael LeRoy, who teaches labor law at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has noted that “[t]he league is keenly sensitive to its public image. [The settlement] changes the conversation and really lets the air out of the publicity balloon.”

That could change on Christmas.
