New Jersey fatal crashes statistics reports that more people died on state roads during the first five months of 2016 than were killed in the same period last year, according to State Police data.

As of June 2, 224 people were killed in 213 crashes, representing a 9.6 percent increase from the 198 people who lost their lives ast year.

Middlesex County, the crossroads for the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and several interstate and state highways, had the highest death toll with 19 people killed, followed by Monmouth County and Essex counties with 18 deaths, and Ocean and Gloucester counties with 15 traffic deaths.

What’s a probable cause? A rebound in the economy, putting more people to work, could be one factor. Employment increased by 1.8 percent in the state in March.

“When [the economy] is good, more people are on the road … and that increases their exposure and risk,” said Pam Fischer, former state Division of Highway Traffic Safety executive director and a safety consultant.

Distracted driving, which state police listed as a top contributing factor in fatal crashes in 2014, also gets some of the blame, Fischer said. She referred to a AAA report that said distraction was a bigger factor in teen driver crashes than government figures show.

“It’s too early to assign any contributing factors,” said Sgt. Jeff Flynn, a New Jersey state police spokesman. “We continue to monitor statistics and address areas that need to be addressed through traffic details and educating the public.”
