One person was shot dead in Jersey City early this morning, police said in a radio transmission. The Jersey Journal reports.

At around midnight police responded to a shooting at Martin Luther King Drive and Orient Avenue, according to the police transmission.

The victim was transported to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health where he was pronounced dead just after 1 a.m., according to the transmission.

A gun and shell casings were recovered in the area of the shooting, the transmission said.

People living in the neighborhood told police they were inside their homes when they heard two shots fired, police said in radio transmission.

This morning’s shooting comes roughly 36 hours after a 23-year-old Jersey City man was shot inside a mini-mart on Ocean Avenue, about a mile away.

This morning’s fatal shooting is the 19th homicide in Jersey City this year and the third since Thursday, when a 19-year-old was shot dead at Winfield and Ocean avenues.

It is also the 24th homicide in Hudson County in 2015, surpassing last year’s total of 23. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Officer could not immediately be reached for more information.
