I’m a lifelong New York Giants fan but a little too young to have ever seen Frank Gifford play.  I’ve heard plenty of stories, though, about how he was a triple threat on offense and  also played defense. They don’t make them like THAT anymore.

I remember Gifford as an announcer first with CBS teamed with his former teammate Pat Summerall (in Summerall’s pre-Madden incarnation) and later in his famous gig on Monday Night Football which he helped make an American institution as the voice of calm (and sober) play-by-play along with Howard Cosell and Dandy Don Meredith.

Even today, Gifford still holds the Giants’ franchise record for touchdowns.

So, today, I remember Frank Gifford as a superb athlete I saw on black-and-white newsreels and also a “just the facts” announcer from a time when announcers actually believed the game was more important than them.
