Feelin’ the Bern
Independent-Democratic -Socialist Bernie Sanders has moved ahead of Hillary Clinton in a Franklinj Pierce University/Boston Herald (FPU/BH) poll of likely New Hampshire primary voters. New Hampshire, of course, holds the first primary in January of 2016 and a good showing can ignite an underdog candidate.
The numbers are Sanders: 44 and Clinton: 37. What makes this really amazing (to me) is that a FPU/BH poll taken in March showed Clinton with a 44 to 7-yes, SEVEN – per cent lead over Sanders.
I’m a personal injury lawyer and I’m certainly not endorsing anyone on this blog. But I continue to be fascinated on a daily basis with the insurgency candidacies in both parties. If we end up with the Bush-Clinton general election so many pundits assured us was a lock, I think we’re doomed to a low turnout and even greater alienation from the electoral system. Not good. It may very well transpire but maybe these candidates who were dismissed as having no chance can breathe some life back into the process.
Say what you will about Trump and Bernie, I hope they -and other candidates- continue to make for a process which engages people and makes it responsive.
* This news comes on the heels of Sanders scoring his first endorsement from a labor union, the National Nurses United — a 185,000-person union and the largest group of nurses in the country. Also, Bernie has been drawing overflow arena crowds – much larger than any other candidate of either party – including over 25,000 in both Portland and Los Angeles this week.
