My headline is really not correct.  The historic agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear program is between not just Iran and the U.S. but five other powers as well. While it appears most Iranians are pleased because it means the lifting of sanctions, there are some hardliners there who harbor reservations.  Of course, here in the United States, it’s an election season so there already has been a stream of criticism, most notably from the Republican presidential candidates (however many there are today).

When I was a young lawyer a judge told me that a proposal that both sides didn’t like was probably a pretty good compromise.  Now, I don’t really know yet if I think this is a good or bad thing.  But when I hear that there are elements in both the United States and Iran who have misgivings, I think of that judge and figure maybe this is a workable compromise.  The fact that seven countries were able to agree also strikes me as reason for hope.  Many people have lived their whole lives only knowing Iran as an enemy of the United States but that, of course, has not always been the case.  I’m not naive but maybe this can be the beginning of a new era.
