East Orange Police Detective Sargent Ronson Johnson has received the National Liberty Museum’s Individual Award of Valor. The National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia is the only museum in the country dedicated to advancing liberty though fostering strong character and civic engagement. Each year, approximately 70,000 visitors walk through the museum’s front steps and are inspired by its unique 78 exhibits and are given the chance to have a uniquely reflective experience through its collection of glass art. The Museum is actively working to bring liberty to life through outreach opportunities including its Young Heroes Club program, which teaches students about liberty, strong character, and how to live like a hero every day.

Sargent Johnson arrived at the scene of a reported shooting. The victim was uncooperative, but Johnson observed enough evidence to determine that the victim had been shot within the residence; furthermore, the building was unfit for human habitation. Community care-taking measures revealed a handgun and narcotics, thus establishing probable cause for a warrant., which then revealed a weapons cache, a substantial amount of narcotics and half a dozen children younger than the age of 13 living in the unfit building. Johnson’s quick response — he was off-duty at the time of the incident — resulted in the removal of the children from an unheated and unclean home.

East Orange Police Sgt. Yasmine Johnson received the Individual Community Service Award, Johnson has built relationships with block and tenant associations in East Orange for 13 years. She organizes a laundry list of community events,

including the National Night Out, various food and clothing drives, and monthly crime watch community meetings, which draw 25 to 40 residents each month. She also runs a weeklong mentoring program for young women in the community.

The National Liberty Museum believes that civic engagement, grounded in strong character, enables liberty to flourish. And that each of us can be a hero of liberty. Because, where liberty lives, people live better.

Congratulations to Officers Johnson and Johnson. East Orange is better because of you and it is because of people such as you that the Law Offices of Karim Arzadi are proud to call East Orange one of our homes.
