Crash tests can show how seat belts save lives. But CBS reports that when it comes to older drivers in particular, seat belts are also blamed for a higher rate of potentially serious, even deadly, chest injuries, as older drivers tend to be more easily injured in a crash. Seat belts are designed to protect an average-sized driver, but they “may actually cause problems for smaller, elderly drivers.” While seat belts saved an estimated 14,000 lives last year, they’re designed to keep an average 40 year-old man safe. Professor John Bolte, of the Ohio State University College of Medicine, wants to develop seat belts that are able to protect those with smaller and more fragile frames. He hopes that one day cars will be equipped with seat belts that “automatically adjust to the person they’re protecting.” He says, ““If a car can drive today without a person controlling it, why can’t we have a safety system that can respond to better save someone?” Researchers stress that no matter what it’s always best to wear your seat belt, but if possible adjust the height of the belt so it rests on your clavicle. It’s also best to adjust your seat so that you’re 10 to 12 inches away from the airbag.
